  16.                     THE FOLLOWING LOW-LEVEL FORMAT PROCEDURE
  17.                     WILL DESTROY ALL DATA ON YOUR HARD DRIVE
  18.                       BACK-UP THE DATA ON YOUR DRIVE BEFORE
  19.                   CONTINUING WITH THE LOW LEVEL FORMAT ROUTINE

  22.      The format instructions that you follow are simple procedures to tell 
  23.      the computer that you have either one or two Winchester disk drives 
  24.      installed and prepares your operating system to recognize the Western 
  25.      Digital controller.  
  26.      
  27.      You will need to know the parameters of your hard disk drives.  As a 
  28.      convenience to you, we have included a list of the most common hard 
  29.      disk drives and their parameters.  To access this list, return to the 
  30.      STORAGE CONTROLLER menu.  If your drive is not listed, contact your 
  31.      drive manufacturer or consult your drive manual to determine drive 
  32.      type and parameters.

  34.      Formatting the drive requires use of one of two software programs:  
  35.      The IBM Advanced Diagnostics (or equivalent for AT compatibles) or 
  36.      WDFMT.  If you do not have WDFMT, you may return to the Main menu and 
  37.      choose the Downloadable Software option.  We have included the WDFMT 
  38.      2.10 software for your convenience.

  41.      1.   Insert your system Diagnostic Diskette (or equivalent).
  42.      
  43.      2.   Turn on power.
  44.      
  45.      3.   Boot diagnostic and select setup option.
  46.      
  47.      4.   Set clock, etc.

  49.                                      CAUTION
  50.                      Avoid system damage by consulting your
  51.                      Technical Reference manual to ensure that your
  52.                      drive type is supported by your host BIOS drive
  53.                      tables.  Not all AT-compatibles share the same
  54.                      drive tables as IBM.

  68.      5.   Select proper drive type.  Set up the system for the proper 
  69.      configuration of diskette and fixed drives, base memory size, 
  70.      expansion memory size and display.  (Consult your Technical Reference 
  71.      Manual.)

  73.                                       NOTE
  74.      USE OF ADVANCED DIAGNOSTICS (OR SIMILAR PROGRAM FOR IBM-COMPATIBLES) 
  75.      IS NECESSARY SINCE THE WD1006-WAH CONTAINS NO ON-BOARD BIOS ROM.  
  76.      HOWEVER, IBM ADVANCED DIAGNOSTICS WILL NOT FORMAT A DRIVE AT 1:1 
  77.      INTERLEAVE.  USE OF WDFMT, SPEEDSTOR FROM STORAGE DIMENSIONS, DISK 
  78.      MANAGER FROM ONTRACK, OR SIMILAR SOFTWARE IS NECESSARY TO FORMAT THE 
  79.      DRIVE AT 1:1 INTERLEAVE.  AGAIN, FORMATTING A DRIVE DESTROYS ALL 
  80.      DATA.  IF YOUR DRIVE CONTAINS USEFUL DATA, BACK UP THE DRIVE BEFORE 
  81.      EXECUTING THE LOW LEVEL FORMAT ROUTINE.

  83.      6.   Insert System Diagnostic Diskette (or equivalent) and execute 
  84.      low level Format.  Follow instructions in your reference manual.
  85.      
  86.      7.   Load and execute the FDISK (to partition your drive).  Do a high 
  87.      level format using the operating system's "Format C:(D)/S" command.  
  88.      Follow instructions in your reference manual.

  90.                                  Troubleshooting
  91.      
  92.      Problem:   1790 Disk 0 Error.
  93.      
  94.      Cause:     No low level format on hard disk.  Wrong drive type
  95.                 selected. Not enough drive power.  Bad cables. Improper
  96.                 drive selection or termination.
  97.      
  98.      Problem:   Drive does not partition.
  99.      
  100.      Cause:     Check drive types.  Note that drive types for the AT
  101.                 and AT-compatibles differ.
  102.      
  103.      Problem:   "Error Reading Fixed Disk" appears when booting from
  104.                 hard drive.
  105.      
  106.      Cause:     DOS partition not active.
  107.      
  108.      Problem:   Winchester activity LED continuously lit.
  109.      
  110.      Cause:     No problem.  Drive LED selected for latched mode.

  134.      Problem:   DOS returns a seek or ID not found error.
  135.      
  136.      Cause:     One possible cause of this problem is a minor incompati-
  137.                 bility between the WD1006S-WAH and the older WD1003-WAH.
  138.                 If the drive has more than eight heads (for instance, a 16
  139.                 head drive), the WD1003-WAH numbers heads 8 through 15 as
  140.                 0 thrugh 7 in the media's ID fields.  Contrawise, the
  141.                 WD1006-WAH numbers heads 8 through 15 as 8 thorugh 15.  To 
  142.                 solve the problem, back up and reformat the drive.  This 
  143.                 is not manifested in drives with less than eight heads.  
  144.                 If this is not the cause of the error, then you have a 
  145.                 drive problem.
  146.      
  147.      Problem:   Slow and inefficient operation.
  148.      
  149.      Cause:     The biggest cause for this problem is an incorrect 
  150.                 interleave factor.  Therefore, some experimentation with
  151.                 the interleave factor may be necessary. (Refer to the
  152.                 format instructions for setting interleave factor).
  153.                 Interleave factors are very dependent on the host
  154.                 operating system and application.
